EUIPO Short IP training - EUD: Conditions of protection (Registration) (new)
Speakers: David Broedelet, Business Operations Department, EUIPO
This session focuses on the legal/substantive assessment of whether a design can be protected (and why), and how to manage novelty/individual-character risks and key exclusions. Learning objectives: • Assess protectability of a REUD by applying the core conditions of protection (design definition, novelty, individual character, disclosure rules, relevant assessment framework, public policy and morality, article 6ter of the Paris Convention). • Identify and handle typical “substantive” risks (e.g., prior disclosure, weak individual character, crowded field) and recommend mitigation strategies (design strategy, filing strategy, evidence strategy where relevant). • Distinguish protectable design features from excluded features, including key exclusions/ limitations (e.g., features solely dictated by technical function; interconnections where relevant).

USPTO Learn to think like a patent examiner with STEPP's four-day course (Interest Form, will be considered until Monday, October 26, or until full capacity is reached) (new)
Similar to the training of new USPTO examiners, all sessions will focus on a sample patent application. This STEPP course will cover how examiners review patent applications according to the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure (MPEP): Day one focuses on the role of an examiner and the steps an examiner takes when reading an application for the first time; Day two uses the details covered during day one to plan and conduct a search, with an emphasis on the relevant legal information; Day three uses the details covered during day two to map prior art to claims using the relevant legal information; Day four finishes discussing the mapping of art to claims and focuses on how examiners write their office actions.
Note: STEPP participants are expected to complete pre-course homework, including computer-based training (CBT) modules and other resource materials. See such list of USPTO CBTs in comments to Aug. 5-8, 2026 STEPP course.
